Our History

In the Beginning:

The biography of Adele Johnson,

Mother of Mary Johnson

One of the Most remarkable human beings to make an impression on the cultural world of the performing arts is Adele Johnson. Her life of dedication to the fine arts and prodigious expenditure of time and talent on the youth of today has enabled her to reach the Zenith of her profession with dignity and respect of her students and alumni.

Adele Johnson's illustrious career began some 50 years ago after moving to , Long Island, New York in 1952. Mrs. Johnson felt a genuine concern for the development of youth in the local area who were without the benefit of exposure to the fine arts. This concern brought about the creation of the Adele Johnson's School of the Performing Arts. The thirst for the arts among local youths, ages 2 to adolescent, was greater than she had realized; expansion to larger quarters was in order. As the years went by, the School became acclaimed by both civic and political leaders as the foundation in the community, where our young people "begin to build their character."

Adele Johnson was called on by town supervisors and political leaders to initiate and develop awareness classes in dance, drama, music and exercise throughout Long Island, New York.

Mrs. Johnson's many accomplishments and achievements include a certificate of appreciation from the New York State Commissioner for participation in the New York State exhibit at the World's Fair, by her championship dance group "The Adele Johnson Rhythmaires", issued by Gov. Nelson A. Rockfeller. In addition to all her awards and letters of recognition throughout Long Island and New York State, she has received scores of trophies and plaques for her dancers being First Place competition winners.

The awards Mrs. Johnson values the most are the letters she receives from her students with endearing phrases such as "you've allowed me to travel the world over thus making me realize what a beautiful place the world is", and "you have taught me so much, I feel I should call you mom", and "you should be named the mother of the year." This is truly evidence of the success and importance of Adele Johnson's work.

Mrs. Johnson also believes in total family involvement, each of her sons and daughters participated in the overall operation of the school, and are today, accomplished dancers, musicians and models.

The recent cultural exchange trip to Africa was overwhelming, yet the plans continue for the school... to include an exclusive engagement to Bermuda next spring by invitation of the Bermudian Government.

Saturday, May 6, 2006 at The Twenty-fifth Annual Freedom Fund Luncheon Adele Johnson was the recipient of the NAACP Cultural Arts Award.
